NDIS Funded Counselling and Transpersonal Art Therapy: A Different Kind of Support

If you've tried talk therapy before and found yourself staring at the ceiling wondering if this is all there is, you might be in the right place.

And if you're a support coordinator looking for something a little different for a client who hasn't quite found their fit yet, keep reading.

If you are an NDIS participant...

You are not a checklist.

Yes, the NDIS world has its language. Emotional regulation. Social participation. Skill building. Daily living. These things matter and they are real. But you are so much more than a list of functional outcomes, and therapy should reflect that.

Whether disability is a new label you are still finding your footing in, or something you have navigated your whole life in a world that wasn't always built for you, I offer a holistic approach that considers you outside of only what you can and can't do.

My name is Mary-Helen. I'm a counsellor and transpersonal art therapist and I work with NDIS participants online, worldwide, at your pace.

Why creative counselling?

Talk therapy and psychology can be incredibly helpful. But sometimes, particularly when there are strong emotions that need to be met, validated and understood first, it can be hard to access what you already know. We can't always think or talk our way out of an inner loop.

This is where combining counselling with creative expression can open a different kind of door. The art can reveal answers and truths that the mind, in its effort to protect us, sometimes won't. It's not about making something beautiful. It's about making something honest.

Sessions combine person centered counselling with creative expression, guided imagery, mindfulness and dream work. Not because you need to be an artist. But because sometimes a mark on a page, a colour, a shape, can say what words haven't been able to. And sometimes the most important work happens not in what you say but in what quietly surfaces when the mind finally gets out of the way.

This is for you if traditional talk therapy hasn't felt like enough. If you have a spiritual leaning or a curiosity about your inner world. If you want to build real inner resources, self trust, confidence and self compassion, in small sustainable steps rather than dramatic leaps.

Recovery and healing are slow. There are mountains and swamps and long stretches of ordinary in between. We work in stepping stones. Bite sized and sustainable. Building and maintaining before rushing ahead.

How we work together

While I am a person centered counsellor, I find that many people benefit from some structure to help them step into exploring deeper things.

I work collaboratively with each person to craft a creative treatment plan. Together we map where you'd like to go, your goals, and the kinds of therapeutic interventions that might support you along the way. Always based in your interests, your world view and what lights you up.

Everyone is different and needs different things. The plan is never fixed. It's crafted and adapted as we go, scaffolding each session to meet you where you are.

And of course life happens. Sometimes we are working to stabilise rather than stretch toward goals. That's not a setback. That's the work.

If you are a support coordinator...

I offer individual counselling and transpersonal art therapy sessions for NDIS participants under the Improved Daily Living support category, line item 15_043_0128_1_3, at the current rate of $156.16 per hour.

Sessions are delivered online via Zoom, making them accessible regardless of location or mobility. I work with participants who may not have responded well to traditional talk therapy and who would benefit from a creative, holistic and person centered approach.

This may be a good fit for your client if they are interested in or open to creative expression as part of their therapeutic process, have psychosocial, emotional or mental health support needs within their plan, are seeking to build inner resources, self awareness, confidence and capacity for self regulation, or have a spiritual or mindfulness leaning that hasn't been well supported in previous therapeutic relationships.

I hold a Level 2 membership with the Australian Counselling Association and a full practitioner membership with the International Institute for Complementary Therapists. A service agreement is required prior to commencement of sessions.

Do I need to be good at art?

Not at all. This isn't about what you make. It's about using mark making and creative expression as a tool for discovery. If you're new to art materials or feeling a little unsure, I can help you understand and befriend them along the way.
